The YF-19: The Need for Speed

If these guys weren’t bad-ass F-14 pilots, I would’ve smacked them in the face for that nerd-looking phrase and the hi-five, then would go into their room to confiscate all the Hustler magazines under their Ferrari beds.

Anyway, the hi-speed configuration for the YF-19 can be seen in about 2 scenes in the OVA and movie, and it’s so fast you definitely have to frame-by-frame it to see it.

I don’t like that shape much, but it’s supposed to be done only in extreme cases since the speed it achieves can easily overcome 10 G’s. The only thing that bugs me a lot is the treatment of this feature in the japanese videogames (like Macross 30) where it’s some sort of boost or afterburner. I think it breaks the aestethics to see her changing the wings from front to back all the time just to gain a bit of speed. Anyway, end of geeky commentary.
