Hey guess what? It’s been 2 years 🙂 Happy second anniversary!
As part of the final pass on me fixing smaller and smaller things so they look good up close, I started making a few renders while I was changing things on the textures and normal maps; so in this sort of gallery, I’m giving you a virtual tour of the YF-19 in plane mode. I’ll do the GERWALK tour and the Battroid tour later.
I probably have more shots of the nose and front part of the plane than of anything else, but it’s because I’m sure this will be a very prominent focus of many shots, so I wanted to get those panel lines nice and smooth (and stop that weird reverse normal effect I was getting)
I learned that there’s a certain distance that doesn’t look that good anymore, so while doing these, I started mentally planning how close would I really get and which type of lens would I use. I had the same initial impression with the cockpit closeups, so this helped me reaffirm that there would be a “safe distance” in the film.
Definitely the big focus on most of shots, so this had to look great, and first thing on the list was fixing that weird panel reversal.
Not many changes to this, except that when I was doing my render tests I had to fix the tyre creases to be less obvious and the inside colour was a bit off-putting, so I ended up changing it to a less saturated, dirtier look.
You can see the change much better in the rear landing gear.
Plenty of small things fixed here, including panel reversal, dirt and reflectivity, the undercarriage lasers and stuff like that.
The original intakes were based on the cartoon, but after a few renders I thought they should be more realistic, so I did some tweakings.
I only had to fix a label here, but it was helpful to see how lines were converging in the hi-res version.
Some panel reversal issues and paying attention to the way the flaps unfold up close.
Fixing same issue with reversed panels and some more shading
